Honey oak, speckled counters, and a layout from 1994

Walk into most kitchens on Bolton’s hills and the same time capsule opens, oak doors gone orange, a counter chosen by the builder, and a floor plan that keeps the cook walled off from everyone they are cooking for.

Here is what surprises people: those old cabinet boxes are often better built than anything a big box store sells today. Solid construction was the norm when these subdivisions went up, which is why the smartest first question is never what colour, it is keep the boxes or replace them. The answer swings the budget by tens of thousands, and Senso Design gives it to you straight at the first visit.

Replace, and the cabinetry comes out of our own Markham facility, cut on German and Italian machines to fit your walls exactly. Refresh, and new doors, counters, backsplash and lighting can make the same room unrecognizable for a fraction of the spend. Either path ends with a kitchen that finally matches the house around it.

Modern kitchen countertops and cabinetry installed by Senso Design in the GTA
New counters, doors and lighting carry most of a kitchen’s transformation.

Three cabinet routes, three very different budgets

Cabinetry decides more of a kitchen’s price than everything else combined, so this is the decision worth understanding before anyone quotes you.

    • Reface what you have. When the boxes are sound, new doors, panels and hardware over the existing frames deliver the biggest visual change per dollar in renovation work. Pair it with counters and a backsplash and guests will swear the kitchen is new.
    • Stock and semi custom, $400 to $650 per linear foot. New boxes in standard sizes, with semi custom adding your choice of door profiles, finishes and organizers. The sensible middle for most Bolton kitchens.
    • Fully custom, $650 to $1,200 per linear foot. Built to the millimetre in Senso Design’s Markham facility, no filler strips, no dead corners, every awkward inch of your kitchen put to work.
    • Islands need more than floor space. Comfortable clearance on every side, electrical brought in for outlets, and structure checked if the old peninsula is coming out. We design islands people can actually walk around.
    • Counters and backsplash set the tone. Quartz runs $90 to $150 per linear foot installed and shrugs off family life, which is why it wins most Bolton kitchens over granite and laminate.
    • Lighting is the cheapest luxury. Pot lights over the work zones, pendants over the island and under cabinet strips turn a dark nineties kitchen into a bright one before a single cabinet changes.

What a kitchen renovation costs in Bolton

Senso Design’s 2026 ranges, before 13% HST. The full working sits in our kitchen cost guide.

    ProjectTypical rangeWhat pushes it higher
Cabinet refresh with counters$15K to $25KStone counters, full height backsplash
Mid range full kitchen$25K to $60KSemi custom cabinetry, layout tweaks
Standard 10×10 kitchen$25K to $45KAppliance upgrades, island added
Custom kitchen with wall removed$60K to $150K+Engineered beam, full custom millwork, premium appliances

Moving things is what multiplies kitchen budgets. Keep the sink, stove and fridge on their existing services and the money goes into what you see. Relocate them and plumbing, gas and electrical trades join the project before a cabinet is ordered.

Walls, gas lines and when Caledon gets involved

    • Same layout, no permit. Cabinets, counters, backsplash, flooring and lighting swapped in place proceed without paperwork.
    • Taking out the wall changes that. Load bearing or not gets confirmed by inspection, and where it carries weight, an engineered beam and a Town of Caledon permit come with it. Senso Design prices that scenario before you commit to the open plan.
    • Relocated plumbing needs a permit too, which matters if the sink is crossing the room to an island.
    • Gas moves are licensed work. Shifting a gas range means a licensed gasfitter, and switching to induction instead often needs a new dedicated circuit. Both are planned line items in our quotes, never surprises.
    • Electrical runs through ESA notification, and modern kitchens are hungry, islands, dedicated appliance circuits and lighting zones all get sized properly.
    • Inspections are our job. Whatever paperwork the scope creates, Senso Design files it in our name and meets the inspector on site.

The teams were well coordinated, small issues were resolved quickly, and the final cost matched the original quote. That last part is rarer than it should be.

    Bolton kitchen questions, answered

How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Bolton?

Out of Senso Design’s 2026 files: a cabinet refresh with new counters lands at $15,000 to $25,000, a mid range full kitchen at $25,000 to $60,000, and a custom kitchen with structural changes at $60,000 to $150,000 or more, before HST. A standard 10×10 sits between $25,000 and $45,000. The address matters less than three choices, the cabinet route, whether services move, and whether a wall comes out.

Should I reface my oak cabinets or replace them?

Open a door and look at the box behind it. If the frames are solid, and in Bolton’s nineties subdivisions they usually are, refacing with new doors and hardware plus quartz counters delivers a stunning result for a fraction of replacement money. Replace when the layout itself is the problem, because no door style fixes cabinets in the wrong places. We tell you which camp your kitchen is in at the free visit, even when it costs us the bigger job.

Can the wall between my kitchen and dining room come out?

Usually, and it is the most requested change in town. The real question is what the wall is doing. A partition wall disappears cheaply. A load bearing one hands its work to an engineered beam, which brings engineering, a Caledon permit and several thousand dollars along. Senso Design confirms which one you own during the consultation, so the budget conversation happens before the design falls in love with open concept.

What does it cost to move the sink or the stove?

Enough that we always ask whether you truly want to. A sink crossing to an island means new supply and drain runs and a permit. A gas range shifting position means a licensed gasfitter, and going induction instead usually means a new dedicated circuit. Each move adds real money before finishes, which is why kitchens that keep their work triangle in place get more visible upgrade per dollar.

How long is a kitchen out of action?

Three to five weeks of construction for most Bolton kitchens, stretching toward eight to ten when structure or full custom work joins in. Before demolition we help you stage a temporary setup, fridge, microwave, kettle and a wash up station, and the crew leaves water running every evening. Families survive it better than they expect, mostly on slow cooker pride.

    Who supplies the appliances?

Either works, but decide early. Your appliance models get written into the drawings so every opening, gas line and circuit is sized for the exact units arriving. The saddest day in kitchen renovation is a fridge two centimetres prouder than its alcove, and it is entirely preventable with model numbers up front.

Do I need a permit to renovate my kitchen in Bolton?

Not for a same layout renovation, which most are. The Town of Caledon enters when structure changes, plumbing relocates or the project grows past finishes. Electrical work carries ESA notification regardless. Where paperwork exists, it is filed under Senso Design’s name and inspected with us present, never yours to chase.

Why is one kitchen quote half the price of another?

Because kitchens hide their costs in the connections. Counters templated and installed, plumbing and gas reconnected, electrical brought to code, backsplash, disposal, and cabinet delivery all have to live somewhere, and thin quotes leave them for later. Put every bid side by side and find those lines. Where a number is missing, it has not vanished, it is waiting for you mid project.

    Where do I start?

With the free consultation. We measure, check what the wall is holding and what shape the boxes are in, then send a budget range within five business days. From there, design, a 3D look at the new kitchen, and a line itemized fixed price. Financing to $100,000 is there if spreading the cost suits the season.
